What Niera is
Niera is the support system you always wanted. You can talk to it at 1 a.m. It answers from your own books and draws what it explains. When you get something wrong, Niera finds out why.
Deep diagnosis
Two kinds of problems. Niera solves both.
A concept you never quite understood, and a habit that costs you marks under the clock. Niera finds both, and sets the practice that fixes them.
01Concept gaps: the idea that gave way
- Step 1 of 31,2-hydride shift
Never checked for a 1,2-hydride shift.
- Step 2 of 3Carbocation stability
Ranked the two carbocations the wrong way round.
- Step 3 of 3Hyperconjugation
Counted every hydrogen, not the alpha C-H bonds.
Fix this one idea and the three that rest on it stop failing.
Every point here is one idea on Niera's own chemistry concept map, which holds 1,372 ideas and 1,222 prerequisites between them.

acetic acid: C2H4O2, carboxylic acid
Worked out from the structure CC(=O)O; the formula computed from the molecule.
pH of 0.1 M acetic acid: 2.87
A weak acid, so [H+] comes from Ka and C, not from C alone.
An SN1 reaction prefers tertiary substrates because its slow step forms a carbocation1, and a tertiary carbocation is the most stable1: three alkyl groups share its charge through hyperconjugation and the inductive effect1.
SN2 has to reach the back of the carbon, and on a tertiary one three methyl groups are in the way1. Here are both, step by step.
18 questions, 32 minutes. +4 for a right answer, -1 for a wrong one.
Unit 10.3 The SN1 mechanism
An SN1 reaction happens in two steps. First the carbon-halogen bond breaks on its own and a carbocation forms. This is the slow step and it fixes the rate, so the rate depends only on the substrate and not on the nucleophile. Second, the nucleophile attacks the flat carbocation from either face, which is why an optically active substrate gives a racemic product.
Tertiary halides react fastest because a tertiary carbocation is stabilised by three alkyl groups through hyperconjugation and the inductive effect. The order of reactivity is 3 > 2 > 1 > methyl, which is the reverse of SN2. A polar protic solvent such as water or ethanol helps by solvating the leaving ion.
Example: tert-butyl bromide in aqueous acetone gives tert-butyl alcohol, and the rate doubles when the bromide concentration doubles but does not change when more water is added.

Given below are two statements. Statement (I): Benzyl chloride reacts faster in SN1 mechanism than ethyl chloride. Statement (II): Ethyl carbocation intermediate is less stabilised by hyperconjugation than benzyl carbocation by resonance. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer:
The paper, marked
Which of these carbocations is the most stable?
SN1: rate-determining ionisation and what accelerates it
The slow step builds a carbocation, so a more stable carbocation forms more easily and the reaction runs faster.
3° > 2° > 1° > CH3
Ask Niera about thisTertiary halides react very fast, and the order is the exact reverse of SN2.
Trap
A benzene ring by itself does not make a halide ionise. Compare the cations.
The benzyl cation delocalises its charge into the ring and forms readily, so benzyl chloride reacts fast. The phenyl cation would sit on an sp2 ring carbon with no way to delocalise, so chlorobenzene does not react at all.

01Where it starts
Why does SN1 prefer tertiary substrates?

01What is Niera, in one line?
Niera is an AI tutor for NCERT, JEE and NEET that you can talk to. It answers from your own books, and when you get a question wrong, it finds the idea or habit behind the mistake.
02Do I have to upload my books?
No, but it works best when you do. Niera answers from the books you upload and opens the page each answer used. Photos of a coaching module work, and so do PDFs and your own marked answer sheets. Without them, answers come from the knowledge base and say so.
03Does anyone else see what I upload?
No. What you upload is used only for you. Nothing from one student's books is ever shown to another student or pooled into a common library.
04Will it just hand me the answer?
It answers the doubt, then sets practice from the problems in your own books and from real past papers. The exam is scored on problems solved against a clock, so a reply you only read is half the work.
05What does it cost?
Nothing while it is in beta, and no card is asked for. Join the waitlist and your invitation arrives by email when a seat opens.
06Which subjects and exams does it cover?
All of NCERT, JEE Main, JEE Advanced and NEET: physics, chemistry, maths and biology, with the concept map also tagged for CBSE, ICSE/ISC and NSEC.
07Will it run on my phone?
It is built for a budget Android phone on mobile data. The molecules turn without a gaming phone, and practice papers open in a layout made for a small screen.
08I am a parent. Is it safe for my child?
Every answer is labelled with where it came from, so a confident guess cannot pass as a fact, and nothing your child uploads is shared with anyone else.
